There’s nothing like the ambiance created by a softly glowing, sweetly scented candle. But those delightful aromas could be hiding some not-so-delightful toxins.
Many scented candles contain chemicals like paraffin wax, synthetic fragrances, and color additives that release compounds which may be hazardous to your health when burned.
Paraffin wax produces carcinogenic soot when lit, along with benzene and toluene – known carcinogens. Artificial dyes and synthetic perfumes also create volatile organic compounds like acetone, xylene and formaldehyde.
Studies show scented candle emissions can create indoor air pollution up to 10 times greater than levels deemed safe. Their constant fumes put you at risk of allergies, asthma, migraine headaches and other issues.
Certain chemicals are also considered endocrine disruptors that interfere with our hormones. Reproductive health concerns have been raised around ingredients found in some popular candles.
So what’s the solution? Look for candles made from soy, beeswax or vegetable oils like coconut and palm. Wood wicks without lead cores are also key. Essential oil based fragrances from plants are far safer than artificial scents.
